You need to add the Avalanche network to your Metamask wallet (instructions below) and then grab your RECEIVING AVAX address, plug that into Coinbase and send your AVAX to Metamask. Confused? Read the in-depth instructions below.

Step 1: Before anything you will need the Avalanche network added to your Metamask, this is super easy to do.

Why send your coins off Coinbase?

Coinbase is a custodial wallet so you do not have complete control over your private keys (which secure your wallet) and your funds. While Metamask is non-custodial which means you have complete control of the private keys which ultimately control your wallet.

As long as you store your private keys securely and DO NOT share them with anyone then you are the only one that has access to your Metamask wallet and private keys. There is still the risk of you connecting your Metamask to a malicious website giving it access to your Cryptocurrency. This is where a hardware cold wallet can come in handy, we’ll cover this later on in the article.

What is AVAX?

AVAX is the native token of the layer 1 blockchain Avalanche. Avalanche is known for its speed and reliability which helped build its thriving DeFi ecosystem. Avalanche is powered by its native token AVAX which can be used to secure the network and process transactions.

Avalanche boasts transaction speeds of over 4,000 tps which puts it on par with other high performing layer 1 networks such as Solana.

With a downtime of 0% since August of 2021 Avalanche quickly became home to DeFi protocols, even occurring a total value locked of $10 billion at its peak. At the time of writing this Avalanches TVL is $1 billion placing it at number 5 largest chain by TVL ahead of giants such as Solana and Fantom.

In the nature of this article it is worth mentioning that Avalanche has its own non-custodial wallet which is another place that you can store your AVAX tokens.

How to securely store your AVAX tokens

While Metamask is a much safer alternative to holding your crypto assets on an exchange there is an even safer way, a hardware wallet.

While Metamask is a “hot” or online wallet it is vulnerable to attacks while a hardware wallet is what is known as a “cold” or offline wallet which removes the possibility and risk of online attacks happening against your wallet.

If you want the maximum security possible and hold large amounts of cryptocurrency I can’t recommend a hardware wallet such as the Ledger more. Two of the most popular hardware wallets are Ledger and Trezor, these are both worth researching to make your decision on which to use.

I personally like the Ledger as I find the design sleeker and it has a wider range of tokens supported.

Conclusion

Hopefully this article not only showed you how to send AVAX from Coinbase to Metamask but also educated you on hardware wallets to increase your security.

Sending AVAX from Coinbase to Metamask is easy and is a similar method with most of the other tokens and networks available on both Coinbase and Metamask.
